Abstract

Peripheral percutaneous tranluminal angioplasty may resotre sufficient distal blood flow for olcer healing in selected patients with severe multi-segemntal vessel lesions. PTA can also be used in combination with surgery to reduce the length of a bypass and to avoid a composite bypass.
Between June 2003 and December 2005 a total of 43 patients 924males and 19 females) underwent percutanceous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for treatment of an occlusive arterial diseas below the knee with critical lower limb ischeamia. The patients were selected according to inclusion criteria and classified in accordance to fontaine classification.
Aortography was performed in all patients to quantify the xtent of doiesease in below-knee arteries. A total of 61 stenoses were visualized and 43 PTA procedures were performed for treatment of these 61 lesions.
The assessment of technique was based on patients clinical observation and necessary tests (ABPI measurement, duplex and angiographic evaluation).
Technical success (resulting in less than 50% residual stenosis) after dilatation is achieved in 37/43 patients and failure in 6/43 patients.
Clinical success defined as healing of resistant ulcer or amputation wound, relived rest pain or even whent it is transformed to claudication .
