Abstract

This study is an attempt to determine the variation in the phenotypic
characters and principal chemical constituents of Eucalyptus and Zjaa mays
plants, caused by the pollutants in the study area.
Eucalyptus samples were collected from locations distributed at different concentric distances from the source of pollution (five directions at four concentric distances) (Figure 1 and 7).
Zea mays planted by farmers in different locations closer to Eucalyptus tree colonies were earmarked for the cultivation of Zea may_s.
In addition, it aimed at the evaluation of pollutants in the environment of the study area released by some factories.
The findings and conclusions of the present study may be summarized as follows:-
1. Evaluation of pollutants in the study area:
Financial and Industrial Company, KZ Insecticides Company ’ and Egyptian Salt & Soda Company have been recognised as important sources of air pollutants in the region. The most toxic air pollutants to vegetation involved are, sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride from the three factories.
The long years of activity of this industrial factories caused accumulation of excessive pollutants in the study area.
The results obtained from the determination of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride in different air samples from different directions and distances in March, August and November in all the three years 1989, 1990 and 1991 revealed that the concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride are high in all samples.
