Abstract

Rabbits represent a good source of human feed. Many breeders are interested in rabbit breeding so as to meat the requirements of animal protein . Because of diarrhoea represents a very common problem affecting rabbit breeding, many investigators directed their attention to study this syndrome . The present study aims to reveal the relationship between enteric bacteria and Cryptosporidium infestation in rabbits .
A total number of 100 diseased rabbits of both sexes and their age ranged between (1-3) months were collected and exposed to clinical and post- mortem examination .
The observed clinical signs were sever watery diarrhoea, dullness, coughing, sneezing, tempany and emaciation .
On the other hand, post mortem examination showed congestion of internal organs with enlargement of liver and spleen and impacted stomach with dry food .
100 samples were collected from diseased rabbits and subjected to both bacteriological and parasitological examination .
Bacteriological examination of the collected samples revealed ”4” bacterial species E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Citrobacter freundii with a percentage of (71%), (10%), (15%) and (5%) repectively. E.coli represented the most prevalent isolated microorganism .
The isolated bacteria were identified on the basis of its morphological, cultural, biochemical and serological characteristics .
Serological identification of the isolated E.coli strains was carried out on 6 chosen E.coli isolates and revealed 6 O serotypes O1, O111, O63 and O146 as one isolate per each . While O126 represented 2 isolates .
The collected samples from infected rabbits were exposed to parasitological examination in order to detect Cryptosporidium infestation
The results showed that the incidence of Cryptosporidium infestation was (20%) in all examined rabbits with higher incidence in females (75%) than in males (25%) .
Bacteriological examination was carried out on the infested rabbits with Cryptosporidium and revealed (4) bacterial species with different degrees in relation to Cryptosporidium .
E.coli represented the most common isolated bacteria with a percentage of (80%) . Meanwhile the other (3) bacterial species were Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter freundii with a rate of (15%), (10%) and (5%) respectively .
Serological identification of E.coli strains which related to Cryptosporidium infestation was carried out . The results revealed 3 O serotypes O1 and O111 as on isolate per each . Meanwhile, O126 represented 2 isolates .
