Abstract Road tunnels play an important role in forming the key road network which links communities together. One of the major requirements of a road tunnel, in terms of drivers’ safety, is the efficient ventilation of tunnel. Air velocity, contaminant concentration, temperature and humidity are the parameters which affect the performance of tunnel ventilation system. This research reviews types of road tunnel ventilation systems, equations of calculating the traffic volume , and the required ventilation rate for road tunnels. In view of the above, the authors have deduced equations to predict air velocity, contaminant concentration, air temperature and humidity along the tunnel length. This study is applied on Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, located at 17 km north of Suez city and crossing under the Suez Canal in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The distribution of the above parameters along the tunnel length are obtained in present time (actual traffic volume), war case and compared with design case. It was suggested that a semi-transverse system is to be executed within Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel. By applying the proposed system, the energy consumption can be saved. |
