Abstract

This research is conducted to achieve a better control system for the main parameters of ECM (Electro-Chemical Machining) process through computer interfacing.
A research dealing with the different research techniques has been achieved to get an overview of the previous work concerning this subject and to understand the different parameters affecting ECM process, its behavior, advantages and limitations.
Due to the lack of a proper ECM machine in the university lab, a test rig has been designed and built to be used for the proposed research.
A measuring device, taper measuring machine, is modified to be suitable as an ECM equipment, which is provided with an electrolyte circulation system and efficient DC power supply.
The machine is equipped as well with special sensors required for In-process measurement, monitoring and controlling purposes of the process parameters.
This system is used for the seek of maintaining the process parameters constant during the ECM” process, this is realized by using computer interfacing.
The ECM test rig is connected to a personal computer using a special analog to digital card; a special package is used in order to maintain the required parameters at pre-determined values.
Machining is carried under different working conditions in order to evaluate the control system performance and to ensure its efficiency.
Two control policies were presented; a constant feed control policy and a constant current one. A special package has been used to control the different machine components providing a user friendly interface.
Design of experiments investigation was performed to select different sets of experiments to clarify the difference between the two machining techniques under different working current conditions.
