Abstract

The thesis comprises three chapters. The first one is concerned with the literature survey on the pyrimidine compounds mainly from their biological effects, equilibrium studies, and the structural chemistry of their complexes.
The second chapter is related to the experimental part. Syntheses of 5-(substituted phenylazo) thiouracil ligands containing groups with different electronic characters
(-H, 2-OCH3, 2-CH3, 3-CH3, 2-COOH, 4-COOH, 3-NO2, 2-Cl, 3-Cl, 3-Br, 2,5-di-CH3, 2,5-di-Cl and 2,4-di-N02) and their transition metal (Co, Ni and Cu) complexes are given. Different standardized instruments (uv-vis, nmr, ir, atomic absorption, magnetic susceptibility, pH and conductivity) are used. The preparation of the solutions (ligands, buffers and metal ions) and the purification of the solvents
[explained. The SPSS programme has been used on an IBM to investigate the solvent parameters on the elecabsorption spectra of the ligands.
The results and their discussions are given in the third chapter. The 1H-NMR in d6-DMSO proved that the ligands are predominating mainly in the keto form. DMSO solvent interaction with the solute can stabilize the NH group. The strength of the intramolecular hydrogen bond.
