المستخلص

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is one of the herpesviruses which is acquired throughout life. In Egypt 100% of children have positive IgG antibodies. (Zakaria et al., 1888 a). The clinical picture of infection differs by time of acquisition. Beyond the neonatal period, infection in the healthy patients is asymptomatic in 90% of cases; when clinical illness occurs, it is usually manifested as an infectious mononucleosis like syndrome (Zaia, 1990). Under conditions of immune compromise, virus reactivates and produce retinitis, encephalitis, hepatitis or gastroenteritis (Mayoral et al., 1991).
