Abstract

Omega-3 are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The name indicates the position of the first unsaturated bond (double bond) in the hydrocarbon chain that is referred to as n-3 sometimes referred to as omega-3. The omega 3 fatty acids are essential substrates for many of the major regulatory lipids in the body and as they can not be synthesized in the body, they are called essential fatty acids. The omega-3 family includes: ?-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, eicosatetraenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (Calder, 2003).
The omega-3 fatty acids have a role in regulation of cell function by modulation of signal transduction via manipulation of membrane fatty acid composition, also they act as ligands for peroxisome proliferators activated receptor ? (PPAR?) a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily which is related to cell proliferation and differentiation in hepatocytes and keratinocytes (Makino et al., 2001). In addition the omega 3 fatty acids have an antithrombotic, immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory actions (Serhan et al., 2000).
