Abstract

Aim of the study was to identify the knowledge, compliance and factors affecting it among patients with esophageal varices. Subjects and methods: the study was carried out on 100 adult esophageal varices patients at National Liver Institute in Menoufyia governorate at endoscopy unit. A descriptive design was used. Tools: data was collected using An Arabic structured interview sheet that was constructed by the investigator based on a review of the related literature. It included two developed tools, knowledge assessment sheet and compliance assessment sheet. Results: revealed that of esophageal varices patients included in the study aged from 35 to less than 50 years, were males and were females, were married, were farmers,were illiterate and mentioned that their monthly income was less than 500 pounds. were from rural areas.of esophageal varices patients had liver cirrhosis had bilharziasis and had virus C. of the sample had previous attacks of bleeding and of them had repeated bleeding attacks from one to two times. of the sample had good knowledge about medication,had fair knowledge about nutrition, had poor knowledge about exercises and had fair total knowledge score. of the sample had fair compliance with medication, had fair compliance with nutrition and, had poor compliance with exercises. And alsoof the sample had fair general compliance score. Conclusions and recommendations: one can say that the higher knowledge score, the higher compliance score. The higher compliance, the lower frequency of bleeding varices. Also gender, cost, forgetfulness illiteracy are the most factors affecting the patients compliance. This study recommended developing a strict written guidelines with colored pictures about prohibited, allowed nutrition and physical activities for esophageal varices patients.
