Abstract

A descriptivecorrelational study was conducted on 130 schizophrenic patients and 60 nursing staff who worked with them at Tanta university hospital , Tanta Ministry of health hospital and Shebin El-kom teaching Hospital in Menofyia University.Introduction Suicide is the most prevalent cause of early death in schizophrenic patients, Despite the progress in therapeutics. Patients with schizophrenia represent of all psychiatric patients who commit suicide, it has been estimated that between 10 and of the patients who are diagnosed with schizophrenia will eventually commit suicide during their lifetime and approximately describe thoughts about killing themselves. These self-destructive behaviors may be the result of auditory command hallucinations, delusions that telling patients to kill themselves or depression and hopelessness within the course of a debilitating illness The aim of the study was to :a. assess the relationship between specific positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and suicidal ideation b. assess nurse’s awareness of their roles. The following tools were used to fulfill the aims of the study:-1) The positive and negative syndrome scales (PANSS): this tool was developed by( Nancy Andreasen , 1984). It consists of 50 items, covers two subscales, as follows : A) Scale for the assessment of positive symptoms of schizophrenia. It consists of 31 items which cover five categories. These are:(hallucination, delusion, bizarre behavior, positive formal thought disorder and inappropriate affect).(B) Scale for the assessment of negative symptoms of schizophrenia- It consists of 19 items which cover five categories. These are:Affective flattening, A logia, A volition- Apathy, Anhedonia- a sociality, impaired attention).2) Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI ).It was developed by (Beck et al, 1979). It Consists of 19 items which can be used to evaluate a patient’s suicidal intentions(3) Nurse’s awareness questionnaire that was constructed by the researcher and was tested for their content validity from the specialists in the mental health nursing field. The main results of the study showed that of schizophrenic patients were aged from 20 to less than years , were males and 20.8 were females, were single, were secondary education and were employed. had mild level of suicidal ideation had moderate level of suicidal ideation had severe level of suicidal ideation There was highly statistically significant positive relation between suicidal ideation level and age. There was highly statistically significant positive relation between suicidal ideation level and (more than three quarters of positive symptoms of schizophrenia except inappropriate affect).There was highly statistically significant positive relation between suicidal ideation level and more than half of negative symptoms of schizophrenia (A volition-Apathy anhedonia- a sociality, and impaired attention ).As regards nursing awareness roles, of the nursing staff reported high level of awareness of their rolesIt was recommended to plan construct a teaching programsto nurses who work with psychiatric patients to assess diagnose, plan and intervene effectively to protect patients from self destructive behavior is highly important.
