Abstract

The aim of this work is to provide an engineering study of the ATM switches to investigate the parameters that affect them and try to propose an ATM switch, that can provide the new services supported by the ATM network. This witch is based on a standard ATM switch (Banyan Switch) as a building unit. This was achieved by simulating the attitude of the proposed switch to be sure that the procedure offered to this witch could be implemented. After that an evaluation was done to see the effect of the switch parameters variation on the delay in this switch. At the end a comparison was done between the proposed switch and another switch from the delay point of view. Chapter one is an introduction presenting the development of the network’s communication. Broad Band ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Networks), which has a huge speed of communication, that can reach 622 Mbps. We also present the services supported with the ISDN. The speed of the ISDN was the first step for what is called Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). The aim of the thesis was shown at the end of this chapter. Chapter two is an over view of OSI (Open System Interconnection) layers to compare it with the ATM layers. Then we gave an overview about the ATM network structure to have an idea about, how the cell is addressed and routed inside the network and also to have a clear idea about where is the switch inside the network. Chapter three shows different types of ATM switches to have an idea about how the ATM switches works to provide certain service supported by ATM network. The presented switches was chosen to be with different kinds of structures. As an example, we have explained a three stage switch, one stage switch and a multi-plane switch. Finally we presented some notes, which have been shown in the ATM network and in the explained switches.
