Abstract

Renal involvement is present to some degree in virtually most children with SLE, ranging from minimal involvement to overt renal failure and it usually affects children more frequently and severely than in adults.
And because of the undetected incidence of lupus nephritis and its epidemiology among Egyptian children, this study included 100 patients with lupus nephritis and all their data were collected retrospectively from the record files at the period from 1988 till 2007 regarding their number with different clinical, laboratory and pathological presentation, medication received and follow up as well.
The results of the study showed that:-
1-The mean age of onset of SLE was 12.18 years ±2.6.
2-The female: male ratio was 2.2:1.
3-Patients at the age group (10-15) were 67% of the whole study group.
4-The mean duration of illness was 5.74 years ± 4.0 with a minimum 1year and maximum 22 years.
5- Patients fulfilling at least 4 criteria of ACR at the initial presentation were 20%.
6- Hypertension was present in 85% while proteinuria was present in 58 % in the study group.
7- Renal biopsy was done initially to the whole study group and the most common class founded according to the WHO classification of Lupus nephritis was class II (38%).
