Abstract

Mg is the forth most common mineral in the body. It is distributed mainly intracellular. Mg has several important functions. Mg acts as regulator of membrane excitability and serves as structural component of the cell membrane. Mg regulates Na+–K+ ATPase which regulates Na+ and K+ concentrations inside the cell. Mg has antagonistic effects on Ca++ because it blocks Ca++ channels in the cell membrane.
Intracellular free Mg is involved in enzymatic activation of hundreds of enzymatic reactions concerning ATP e.g.: DNA synthesis, protein synthesis and energy metabolism.
